Paul Otto is a native of Chicago. He was formally educated in the field of architecture, receiving his bachelor's degree from Kansas State University. He is in fact a registered architect and this background has greatly influenced his photography. While being involved in photography most of his life, it was not until 1980 that he began to exhibit his work. He has received acclaim in numerous one man shows and national juried exhibitions. He has taught photography in adult education programs.

His style is best described as representational though not necessarily literal and it is generally characterized by a bold composition accompanied by a sense of stillness and serenity. The subject matter is varied and reflects his interest in nature and architecture.
